Akshay, I really enjoy your notes on research talks/papers. Thanks so much!
The paper on tracing information flow using internet chain letters is very interesting; the deep chains were a surprise. The asynchrony argument seems plausible, but I wonder whether there are other reasons? For example, it seems to me that people who actually sign and forward would be motivated to make long lists of signatures in order to maximize the power of their grass-roots effort.

Thanks Kevin, comments from folks like yourself is what has kept me motivated to blog. I have found that I learn more from the insights in the comments that people provide.

You do make an interesting point. While writing this post, I was wondering about the same thing. Also, whether there was some form of self-selection going on here. I mean -- do individuals have a sense of who the political activists are in their circle of friends? They are more likely to forward the chain to such people, knowing that they would be most effective in spreading the message. I guess, we would need to see the success rate of the forwards from the original data. Secondly, as you point out, having the list of names available within the message would probably also be a likely cause. The snowballing effect seems inevitable in this case. To some extent this may be handled by the spatial model where an individual participates if sufficient number of like-minded-neighbors have forwarded the same message.
