Communication and Social Reach

Earlier this week I received a message (via Orkut) from a friend of mine with whom I had lost touch for a very long time. That set me thinking about how the availability of different communication platform in social media has actually increased our social reach and ability to reach/connect with people. Here is a simple graphic I made to express my thought. Facebook, Twitter and other social network platforms go beyond the reach of traditional phone/IM. Social bookmarks and blogs extend it further and allow us to reach out to a much wider audience, with some of whom we may only share a one-way communication.
